In our world, where public discourse often feels more like a battlefield and customer-facing roles are constantly challenged, the concept of messiness in life has taken on a new dimension. The stress and strain of maintaining civility in such an environment can seem overwhelming. Yet, amidst this turmoil, there are still moments of unexpected beauty and insight – what I like to call ‘miracles in the mess.’

Balancing Perfectionism and Presence
Lately, I’ve been navigating the delicate balance between striving for perfection and being fully present. I’ve discovered over the decades that allowing myself to embrace the messiness of life, with all its imperfections, leads to more authentic experiences and unexpected joys in my professional life. Yet, when perfectionism takes the driver’s seat, opportunities for growth and connection often slip away. I’m committed to reintegrating a playful, open presence into more aspects of my life but it’s far from straightforward.

Meanwhile, I’m exploring the work of David Brooks and the Aspen Institute. Their focus on societal healing and unity offers a glimmer of hope and inspiration to me on multiple levels. These initiatives might just be the ‘miracles’ we need in our current societal mess.

Creative Exploration
During the pandemic I played with acrylic flow painting. More recently I’ve been venturing into the world of short video creation for TikTok and Instagram. This new journey is still very much a battle against my own perfectionist tendencies. I notice that I am increasingly less willing to allow for messiness since the pandemic ended. I’ve been taking fewer risks and allowing my perfectionism to creep into more areas of my life, which is taking me away from the miracles! (If you follow my videos, you will definitely see this struggle.)

Explore Leadership Coaching
If the themes of navigating life’s messiness, perfectionism, and finding unexpected miracles resonate with you, consider the value of leadership coaching. I am almost always working with my own coaches to help me make progress in the areas I can see that are holding me back. A coach can guide you through personal and professional challenges, helping you to uncover your unique path and the hidden miracles in your life.

Bottom line, as we journey through life’s chaos, let’s remind ourselves to embrace both the messy and the miraculous. Reflect on how accepting life’s unpredictability can lead to growth, joy, and maybe even a few miracles.
